Discover Anjuna

A distinctive North Goa beach, a famous flea-market tradition, independent cafés, memorable places to eat and a lively after-dark scene.

Anjuna's rocky shoreline, beach cafés and palm-covered headland in North Goa, in warm late-afternoon light.
Anjuna combines a rocky coastline with lively beach cafés and a social atmosphere.

Anjuna suits travellers who want more personality than a conventional resort strip. It combines a rocky, photogenic beach, independent cafés and restaurants, sunset venues, nightlife and the famous flea-market tradition. It is livelier and more eclectic than Morjim or Mandrem, but less resort-oriented than Candolim.

Best for

Couples, independent travellers, food-and-drink seekers, younger travellers, nightlife lovers and families who enjoy having plenty to do around their base.

The trade-off

Anjuna is not the place to choose for a quiet, polished beach-resort holiday. The village is spread out, roads can feel busy in season, and the atmosphere changes from one pocket to another.

IndiaWise’s take: Choose Anjuna if you want your Goa trip to have a personality of its own. If your priority is a quieter beach, compare Morjim, Mandrem / Arambol, Agonda or Palolem / Canacona. For maximum convenience and a more conventional first-time base, consider Candolim.

Why choose Anjuna?

  • More character than a conventional resort: Anjuna has a strong independent, creative and alternative identity.
  • Beach + market + nightlife: You can combine a beach day, market browsing and an evening out without changing your base.
  • A strong café and food scene: Expect everything from Goan flavours and seafood to relaxed brunches and cocktail-led evenings.
  • A useful base for exploring: Nearby Vagator and Chapora add cliffs, viewpoints, a historic fort and more places to go out.

Best Things to Do in Anjuna, Goa

Anjuna works best when you mix its signature experiences rather than treating it as just another beach stop.

Spend time at Anjuna Beach

The rocky formations and changing coastline give Anjuna a more distinctive landscape than the long, continuous resort beaches farther south. Treat it as a place for a coastal walk, a swim only where conditions are safe, or a slow afternoon followed by a sunset stop. Sea conditions vary; follow local lifeguard and beach-safety advice.

Browse the Anjuna Flea Market

The market is one of Anjuna’s signature experiences, traditionally held on Wednesdays, with clothing, jewellery, crafts, homeware and food stalls. Goa Tourism lists it as a Wednesday market, but dates and stall activity can vary by season; check locally before building your day around it. Go earlier if you prefer to browse before the busiest period, keep an eye on your belongings, inspect purchases and agree prices clearly before buying.

Visit Chapora Fort

Just beyond Anjuna, Chapora Fort is worth the short trip for its historic setting and wide views over the river and coastline. The approach includes uneven ground and can be exposed to sun, so wear suitable footwear, carry water and avoid the hottest part of the day. Sunset is popular; allow time for the return journey.

Find a quieter village moment

St Michael’s Church and the surrounding village offer a change of pace from the beach and nightlife. Pair a short heritage stop with lunch or a café visit rather than trying to make it a full-day attraction.

Check seasonal markets and local experiences

The Saturday Night Market and some music venues operate seasonally or change their schedules. Treat these as date-dependent plans: seasonal — check if open for your dates. If you want a cooking experience, choose a named operator with current availability and clear details rather than relying on a generic listing.

Experience Anjuna’s varied nightlife

Anjuna’s nightlife is about more than nightclubs. You can start with sunset cocktails overlooking the coast, enjoy a relaxed dinner with drinks, or seek out music venues and late-night parties in Anjuna and neighbouring Vagator. The choice ranges from laid-back evenings to a much livelier scene during the main tourist season.

If nightlife is part of your reason for visiting, Anjuna is one of North Goa’s most interesting bases. Some venues and events operate seasonally, so check what is running during your stay and arrange a safe ride home. For more detail, see the Anjuna nightlife section below.

Anjuna nightlife: what to know

Nightlife is part of Anjuna’s identity, but the area is not one continuous party strip. Some places are better for sunset drinks or a relaxed evening; others are associated with music events that may run only on selected dates. The neighbouring Vagator / Chapora circuit adds more options, but it is worth checking the exact venue location before booking transport.

  • Sunset and cocktails: Purple Martini is a natural starting point for a sunset-to-evening plan.
  • Cocktail-led dining: Elephant & Co. is more suited to an evening meal and drinks than a traditional nightclub night.
  • Music and late-night venues: historic names such as Curlies, Shiva Valley and Hilltop are part of the area’s wider nightlife story, but their current operating status and event schedules must be verified for your dates before you rely on them.

Plan your ride home before drinking, use a reputable taxi or driver, and do not assume a venue is open because it appears in an older guide or social post.
